There is a serious problem in Australia when it comes to waste management. To really drive the point home, Australian consumers throw away around 3.1 million tonnes of food each year. When rotting food is thrown away, it ends up in landfill and turns into methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. This in turn, produces air pollutants that are released into the atmosphere and affect our health.
But that’s not all. Add the 5 billion tonnes of plastic that ends up in landfill and we’re facing an issue that sees us depleting our finite resources and damaging our environment for future generations.
These are just two examples of the types of issues we’re currently facing. The fact of the matter is, the Australian Government is facing many more challenges relating to waste management. Needless to say, the traditional linear approach that our economy has invested in is not sustainable and is creating extensive and irreversible environmental damage. That’s why Wastech is committed to a future where a circular economy is adopted, so we can ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.

Waste and recycling projects: A case study
We are proud to have been a part of many projects that are working towards better waste management solutions. As leaders in concept design, manufacturing and installation of Transfer Station Systems, we have created many products that have been used in busy metropolitan facilities through to small regional areas.
For the Marlborough Blenheim Transfer Station in New Zealand, Wastech designed, manufactured and installed C&I/C&D sort equipment. The Council was looking to divert more than 8,000 tonnes of waste each year that would end up in landfill. We significantly helped to reduce this number by building a new waste sorting system. Our facility combined screening equipment, magnetic and manual sorting that picked anything out that could be reused or recycled. With the capacity to process up to 15 tonnes per hour, our transfer station created jobs within the local community, extended the life of landfill and also delivered a supplementary income stream from the materials that were recovered.
We aim to be a major contributor to Australia’s circular economy by providing end-to-end services in all states and territories across the nation. With a presence that has expanded offshore to New Zealand, we’re working towards a circular economy that we hope will be adopted across the globe.
